A Day off...

I was watching CNN this morning for the news.  They played Lee Greenwood's Proud to be an American, and my nose started to flare.  Dang cheesy, but I love it.  Today, Lig and I went to go get new dishes.  I wanted plastic, but we settled on the Correll dishes because they are so squeeky clean after you wash them, plus, they were light too.  I just don't like that they are so loud, and so expensive.  $5 a plate is not cheap.

----> MAGIC Talk

I have decided to post rankings only once a month.  My score jumped 18 points last week.  I'm a good run away from 1700.  I can't wait, because there are some pretty good people up here that won't respect you unless you have a decent score as well.  I'm thinking if I play a lot, I will probably just settle around 1750.

I read an article that said, your score will eventually stabilize to your level.  The amount of games you play do not determine what your score is, but you do have to play enough to know where you really stand.  They are saying, atleast 40-50 events.  Wow, that is a ton of FNM.  After only 16 events, my score is still going up and it's already at 1668.  If you look at me as your guage, what score should you have?  Some of you should be at 1700 already.

Condescending players

Does this give you the right to condescend on your opponents?

Now that I think about it, the player I was playing in the final was really condescending to me.  I'm glad that I wasn't bothered while we were playing, or it could have effected my play.  Johan reminded me, and Yig Second asked me, and thats how I remembered.  I mean, I don't even think he's a pro.  I know he's got two top 8's and thats great and all, but that doesn't give the right to talk down to people.

I admit, he was a good player, and actually a nice person too, but if only he had noticed how he talked, he would realize he can put off a lot of people this way.  I also understand, it's maybe a way of intimidating his opponents and telling them that he's already won.  I know that works sometimes.  Psychology can play a big role in determining an outcome of the game.  Luckily, The Source is my home for FNM, so I wasn't really intimidated in my own backyard.

I mentioned to Peter earlier about playing when it counts, and when you are playing for fun.  I know this doesn't work for everybody, but I feel like I am a much better player when I am loose.  I think that was the difference between me and Peter's match.  I was loose, and he wasn't.  Because right after I took two straight wins to take the first round, we decided to play test for fun, and he crushed me.  LOL.  I always tell people to relax at FNM, because seriously people, you guys are too tense sometimes.  Well, it works for me...  Only more FNM's and PTQ's are the way to get rid of these jitters.  What bothers me sometimes is that FNM takes too long sometimes.  I need my wife to come see half way through if I'm to do well I think, by the 3rd game, I start missing Wes.  I would never do well at a PTQ.

And win one of those pins.

FNM Report

I have been playtesting Vampires for a few weeks now, ever since Zendikar came out.  Thanks everybody up here for helping me get my deck to where it needs to be.  I took a lot of suggestions, and there was only really two cards in all my deck that didn't help much.  The Bloodwitch, that's it.  I casted her twice, and she was underwhelming.  I will probably replace her with two more Deathmarks in the sideboard.

Anyway, I won't list my deck but it was Vampire, and the two star cards of the night for me were Duress and Ad Nauseam.  There wasn't a time I casted any of those without great turmoil (Duress).  And then where it didn't swing the game from being an even battle to insurmountable advantage (Ad Nauseam).  In the final game, I casted a late Duress, which hit nothing, but I got to pilot my deck knowing what cards he had in his hand, and he scooped after my Ad Nauseam hit 7 cards and I only loss 7 life at the end of his final turn (I had a Nocturnus out), the last one of which was a Tendrils, which I would have drawn on my turn.

It made him look twice at my cards lol.

Anyway, I had to beat:

1st round: Peter's Red Deck Wins - Vampires gain life.  Not really fair since Peter hadn't really playtested it.

2nd round: Mirror match, vs regular/net deck Vampire build.  But I had Ad Nauseum vs his Sign in Blood.  Ad Nauseum wins! lol.  We both spit out our hands and trade vampires and gain about 10 life each.  Then he signs in blood for two.  At the end of his turn, I Ad Nauseum for 7 cards, and only lose 10 for it.  Second game is pretty much the same, I have a better Vampires deck.

3rd round: Elves!  Bloodbraid into Arch Druid? Overrun.  This deck is pretty fast, and he had great hands all 3 games.  3rd game went down to the end.  Duress and Hexmage won me both games.  Took out his planeswalkers, and my removal was too much in the end.  The acension crippled his late game play.

4th round: Naya Bushwacker.  Bloodbraid into Bushwacker, Knight of Eos the Nacatles and Scute Mobs!?
He also had two PTQ top 8's and I think he was in town for the big tournament, and came to test his deck at the Source.  Both opening hands I had Ad Nauseum and I hit 5 mana every turn, he had no chance.  His path of exiles gave me the lands I needed to win every game.  The last of which I already described was really painful and he scooped.

My proudest moment was that he said he's going to take the Ad Nauseum idea into consideration, and he hadn't considered playing vampires until I played all those Ad Nauseums on him for a Necropotence like advantage.  90% of the cards in my deck are 1-2 casting cost, and one of my 4 casting cost cards was the tendrils to gain it right back.

OK - I've said too much... and oh yeah, I forgot to change my lineup.  A gift win for whoever I'm playing.

This was a tough night, but you get lucky sometimes.

FNM again.... and...

Josh just won the PTQ Shanghai, and that's been hanging over my head a little bit.  I'm damn proud of him, but I honestly can't say it doesn't burn any competitive fire in me.  That's why it feels good to win FNM this week out of a large group of 27 people.  Still FNM is just FNM.  Anybody can win FNM.

See what you started Josh!?
